BEN GRUENBERG - Department of International Trade

International Trade Trainee 2019-2021

DIT is certainly a great place to start your career and really gives you space to learn and develop.

BEN GRUENBERG
  • There is a huge variety in the types of work I have done – from Ministerial briefings and supporting trade negotiation sessions, to running trade promotion events with overseas stakeholders to create export opportunities for British businesses.

  • The variety of work keeps things interesting. There is a great culture of allowing people early on in their careers to take ownership of important work streams and have significant responsibility. DIT feels like a very dynamic department where new ideas will always be listened to. DIT is certainly a great place to start your career and really gives you space to learn and develop.

  • Things can be extremely fast paced at DIT. During negotiations, the situation can change by the hour (or minute) and it’s challenging to keep your brief fully up to date at times. However, this is also makes things very exciting. You certainly won’t feel bored in DIT !

  • I’m based in India and adapting to a new culture whilst trying to navigate somewhere very different like India certainly throws up unexpected hurdles, but I have plenty of great colleagues who are more than willing to help. The challenges of working abroad are completely outweighed by the incredible time you will have while you’re there. It’s a unique opportunity to see and experience a new culture.

  • Say yes to everything! New and exciting opportunities come up all the time, so seize as many as you can. Also, don’t be too hard on yourself. These roles are challenging, so ask lots of question and don’t worry if you don’t understand everything instantly. Remember, the point of the programme is to learn!
